Layered Canyon Walls in Western Australia Dry Season

by Sheila Duran

Soft, overcast light spreads evenly across a deep river canyon carved into Western Australia's arid landscape. Striated sedimentary layers of rust, ochre, and pale cream descend steeply toward the water, revealing millions of years of geological deposition. Dramatic, textured clouds hover low above the canyon rim, their gray undersides diffusing the morning glow without casting harsh shadows. The dry season leaves the riverbed exposed in places, where pale sand and scattered driftwood rest against the dark, wet stones. From this high vantage point, the canyon curves in a sweeping U-shape, showing the sheer scale of the eroded rock face. A thin ribbon of water winds through the base, reflecting the muted sky above the jagged cliff edges.
