Valve House on Snowy Slope at Sunset in along a dam spillway in Inhambane

Valve House on Snowy Slope at Sunset

by Neil Davila

Steel plates of the penstock valve house grip the steep, snow-dusted incline along the dam spillway. Late afternoon light spills from the horizon, wrapping the metal surfaces in a warm, low-angle glow that contrasts sharply with the cool blue shadows of the early spring snow. Wind-whipped snow drifts accumulate against the reinforced concrete base, while converging lines of the spillway channel toward the distant vanishing point. The engineered structure stands rigid against the elements, its rivets and seams visible in the crisp air. Frost rests on the lower corners of the steel doors, and the white slope curves gently beneath the dark industrial form.
