Steel Penstock Bend Wrapped in Snowmelt Before Dawn in above a spillway chute with spray rising in the Scottish Isles

Steel Penstock Bend Wrapped in Snowmelt Before Dawn

by Amy Petersen

Cold moonlight pools on the curved steel surface of a massive penstock bend, its riveted bands gleaming with condensation. Thick sheets of melting snow rest on the upper rim, dripping steadily into the mist rising from the spillway chute below. The air hangs heavy and humid, visible as a soft haze that softens the distant rugged peaks of the Scottish Isles. Heavy iron bands encircle the pipe at regular intervals, their rusted edges catching the pale light. Water droplets race down the vertical seams, leaving dark streaks against the grey metal. In the foreground, the spray creates a fine veil that obscures the lower structure, while the leading lines of the pipe draw the eye upward toward the shadowed horizon where the pre-dawn sky begins to lighten.
