Penstock Valve House on Snowy Slope
by Olive Reyes
Heavy overcast skies press low against a steep, snow-covered mountainside beside a hydroelectric intake near Skostredet in Bergen. A stark, industrial valve house rests on the incline, its concrete and steel surfaces rendered in muted grays and dull metallic tones. Hard coastal glare slices through the cloud cover, creating sharp, high-contrast highlights on the snowdrifts while casting deep, blue-tinged shadows into the crevices of the structure. The building's rectangular geometry stands rigid against the organic chaos of the winter landscape. Wide panoramic framing shows the vast scale of the terrain, showing the isolation of the infrastructure. Snow blankets the ground in thick, uneven layers, while the metal walkways gleam with a wet, cold sheen. at the edge is a thin line of rust staining the lower corner of the steel door, marking the edge where the metal meets the frozen earth.
