Sunset Spillway Wall of Water at Tepic Dam in along a dam spillway near Tepic

Sunset Spillway Wall of Water at Tepic Dam

by Nolan Blackwell

Golden evening light strikes the turbulent face of a massive concrete spillway near Tepic, illuminating a vertical wall of churning white water. The wet gray stone shows dark vertical streaks where moisture has seeped into the joints. Above, heavy storm clouds gather in layers of slate and charcoal, their undersides catching the last amber rays of the setting sun. The water crashes against the base, creating a thick, rising mist that softens the lower edges of the structure. To the right, the dry, scrubby terrain of the wet season hillsides slopes down toward the concrete channel. The sheer scale of the release dominates the frame, with the white foam contrasting sharply against the deepening blue shadows of the canyon walls. One spray droplet freezes in the air near the crest, catching the fading light.
