Triton Snail Preying on Starfish in Senegal Kelp in through a forest of kelp fronds in Senegal

Triton Snail Preying on Starfish in Senegal Kelp

by Kirk Mendoza

Bright midmorning light falls through a dense forest of kelp fronds in Senegal, casting soft, diffused shadows across the sandy ocean floor. A giant Triton snail, its shell displaying broad bands of cream and deep brown, crawls from behind a Crown-of-thorns starfish. The starfish spreads its many spiny arms across the sand, its reddish-orange hue against the pale green kelp. A gentle haze of plankton softens the distance, creating a luminous, submerged mystery. The snail's muscular foot presses firmly against the starfish's central disk. Fine grains of sand rest on the starfish's spines, while the translucent kelp fronds sway gently in the background, their edges blurring into the plankton haze.
