Thailand Canal Lock Aqueduct at Dusk in at a canal lock chamber in Thailand

Thailand Canal Lock Aqueduct at Dusk

by Gracie Larson

Heat shimmers rise from the sun-baked concrete banks of a massive canal lock in Thailand, distorting the air just above the ground. Viewed from a low angle, the water-filled aqueduct stretches horizontally across the frame, its surface reflecting the fading sky. Signal lamps mounted on the lock walls begin to glow with a warm, amber intensity, cutting through the cooling blue twilight. The dry season leaves the surrounding earth parched and cracked, contrasting sharply with the deep, dark flow of the canal water. Rough textures of weathered stone and smooth water surfaces meet under the heavy, structural weight of the lock gates. A small, bright reflection of a signal lamp glows on the wet stone ledge near the bottom right corner.
