Fireflies Over Ruined Aqueduct at Dusk in under a cable-stayed bridge span near Nairobi

Fireflies Over Ruined Aqueduct at Dusk

by Brian Glass

Cool blue twilight washes over weathered stone blocks forming a ruined aqueduct, their rough surfaces catching the dim glow of nearby utility lights. Above, the steel cables of a modern bridge span cut diagonally across the darkening sky, framing the ancient masonry below. Tiny points of bioluminescent light drift through the air, weaving in and out of the stone arches. The wet concrete reflects the soft artificial glow, creating sharp, elongated highlights against the cool blue shadows. Converging lines of the aqueduct walls lead toward a distant vanishing point where the stone meets the deepening horizon. Each glowing insect marks a fleeting path against the rigid geometry of the infrastructure.
