Silhouetted Moroccan Bell Tower with Nesting Pigeons in at the edge of a reed bed in Morocco

Silhouetted Moroccan Bell Tower with Nesting Pigeons

by Alan Bender

Flat noon light turns the crumbling bell tower into a stark, dark silhouette against a bright, washed-out sky. Rain falls in thin, vertical streaks, blurring the edge where the structure meets the reed bed below. Inside the open belfry, a cluster of pigeons nests among the exposed wooden beams and stone debris. Their grey forms press against the hollow frame, heads tucked or turning as water drips from the eroded masonry. The tower stands isolated at the water's edge, surrounded by the green tips of early spring reeds bending under the weight of the brief sun shower. One drop slides down a jagged stone edge, catching the light before vanishing into the dark water below.
