Surreal Ocean Doorway in Monrovia Train Station

by Ezra Lopez

Wet gravel reflects the spill of distant street lamps, casting sharp, wrought-iron shadows across the floor of a restored Monrovia train terminal. Rain-slicked surfaces gleam under the late-night light, showing the humid air that hangs heavy in the space. The architectural lines of the station converge toward a solid wall, yet that wall dissolves into a sudden, impossible aperture. Through this opening, the dark, churning ocean stretches out where stone should exist, waves rolling silently into the indoor courtyard. A lone metal door frame stands rigid against the water, its iron texture against the fluid motion beyond. The shadow of the gate stretches forward, intersecting the horizon line where the sea meets the station floor.
