Uphill Water in Container Home Terminal Kunming

by Michelle Quinn

A converted shipping container home sits centrally within the vast, restored train terminal in Kunming, surrounded by high arched windows that flood the space with late morning tropical light. Dramatic, heavy clouds press against the glass ceiling, casting shifting shadows across the corrugated metal exterior of the structure. The floor is a polished concrete slab reflecting the bright sky. In a deliberate impossibility, a stream of clear water flows upward along a gentle slope built into the floor, defying gravity as it climbs toward the highest point of the room. There, the water pools in a deep, still basin atop the container's roof, suspended against the industrial backdrop. The water's surface ripples gently, catching the electric excitement of the light as it rests on the metal edges.
