Upside-Down Reflection of Copper and Rain in Terminal
by Howard Rush
Soft, overcast midday light fills the restored train terminal in Nairobi, illuminating a study of oxidized copper, salt crystals, and rainwater. The ceiling transforms into a shimmering sheet of water, reflecting the room upside down. Below, the actual copper surfaces display turquoise and verdigris patinas alongside white salt accumulations. Condensation beads on nearby glass panels, blurring the boundary between the solid floor and the liquid sky above. The inverted reflection mirrors the architectural details of the terminal roof, creating a seamless, disorienting loop where gravity appears suspended. Sharp edges of the metal contrast with the fluid distortion of the water ceiling, at the base of the impossible scene in tangible textures. A droplet of water hangs precariously from a copper rivet, mirroring a raindrop on the inverted ceiling.
