Ocean Doorway Through Blinds at Twilight in inside a glass-roofed arcade in Kelowna

Ocean Doorway Through Blinds at Twilight

by Alice Coleman

Dim twilight light falls through angled jalousie blinds, casting sharp, rhythmic stripes of pale blue and warm amber across polished ceramic tiles. The geometric shadows stretch across the floor, meeting a stark white wall that should be solid. Instead, a rectangular opening in the plaster reveals a churning, deep blue ocean with whitecaps, water level matching the interior floor perfectly. The glass roof above reflects the fading sky, while small interior lamps cast soft pools of yellow light on the clean surfaces. The impossible horizon sits flush against the tiled floor, creating a seamless transition between the dry arcade and the salt water. One shadow of a blind slat falls across the wet edge where the water meets the tile.
