Supercell Mesocyclone Over Benin Tea Plantation in at the edge of a tea plantation in Benin

Supercell Mesocyclone Over Benin Tea Plantation

by Rachael Marsh

A massive supercell dominates the horizon, its rotating mesocyclone twisting into a dark, funneling shape above rows of tea bushes. Just after sunrise, the misty dawn light diffuses through the monsoon clouds, casting a pale gray glow that silhouettes the storm against the brightening sky. Wind whips the tea leaves into a blur of motion, bending the stalks toward the ground. The storm base presses low over the flat agricultural fields, creating a stark contrast between the calm, orderly crops in the foreground and the churning, violent weather overhead. Dark rain shafts hang from the cloud base, ending abruptly before touching the earth. One wet leaf clings to a twisted branch in the immediate foreground.
