Dust Devil Over Ho Chi Minh Lakebed in over a horizon of stacked thunderheads near District 3, Ho Chi Minh City

Dust Devil Over Ho Chi Minh Lakebed

by Marissa Macias

A swirling column of fine brown dust rises from the cracked, pale surface of a dry lakebed near District 3. Behind this ephemeral vortex, a massive wall of stacked thunderheads dominates the horizon, their bases heavy with dark grey monsoon moisture. The early morning light casts the foreground into deep shadow, while a sharp rim of pale blue light outlines the top edge of the dust column and the highest cloud peaks. Sea spray hangs in the air, blurring the transition between the arid ground and the humid sky. Layers of depth recede as the lakebed stretches toward the storm, ending in the dark silhouette of the mountain-like clouds. The dust swirl tightens against the grey base of the nearest thunderhead.
