Cornfield Edge Before Storm in Quetzaltenango

by Rhonda Pittman

Dry stalks of corn line the edge of a harvested field, their leaves trembling in a gust of wind beneath a heavy sky. The ground is a patchwork of stubble and bare earth, stretching toward a horizon dominated by towering, dark cumulus clouds. Flat noon light softens into a diffuse gray glow as the sun hides behind the storm front. The air appears still in the immediate foreground, yet the distant rows of crops ripple in unison. Layers of green and brown recede into the distance, creating a deep sense of space. One dried husk clings to a stalk near the bottom right corner, its paper texture stark against the darkening clouds above.
