Supercell Mesocyclone Over Dry Farmland in beside a tractor track through dark soil near Gangtok

Supercell Mesocyclone Over Dry Farmland

by Lisa West

Dark soil turns a deep charcoal along a narrow tractor track that cuts through the foreground. Above, a massive supercell cloud dominates the sky, its rotating mesocyclone visible as a distinct, funnel-like structure. The dry season leaves the fields barren and textured with cracked earth. Low-hanging clouds press against the horizon, creating a heavy, oppressive ceiling. Copper-toned light from the setting sun bathes the undersides of the storm in vivid orange, contrasting sharply with the deepening blue of the upper atmosphere. The low-angle illumination stretches long shadows across the furrows, showing the scale of the weather system. A faint dust haze lingers near the ground where the wind begins to pick up.
