Aerial Tulip Fields Benin Salt Ponds

by Audrey Moore

Warm oblique light floods a high-altitude view where vivid parallel stripes of tulips stretch across the Beninese landscape. The wet season saturation turns the flowers into bands of crimson, gold, and violet that cut sharply against the pale, misty salt ponds below. Low-lying ground fog pools in the depressions between the cultivated rows and the white salt crusts, softening the edges of the causeways that slice through the water. Diagonal lines of the fields create a geometric tension against the organic spread of the fog. The honeyed evening sun casts long, thin shadows from the flower stalks onto the soil, highlighting the rough texture of the earth. at the edge is the sharp, white edge of a salt ridge meeting the dark, wet soil of a field corner.
