Winter Fog Seeps Cracked Concrete Dam Spillway

by Norman Raymond

Pale late-afternoon light falls through bare winter branches, casting dappled patterns across the weathered gray surface of an abandoned dam. Below, a spillway chute channels water seeping through deep fissures in the rough concrete masonry. A fine mist rises from the chute, merging with a low layer of fog that softens the distant horizon. The stone shows patches of dampness beside dry, dusty areas where the sun hits directly. Leafless trees frame the upper left corner, their long shadows falling across the massive structure. A small pool collects in a jagged crack near the base, mirroring the pale gray sky above.
