Rain-Slicked Sluice Gate Handle at Dawn in along a levee path above floodwater near Tegucigalpa

Rain-Slicked Sluice Gate Handle at Dawn

by Terrence Rocha

Pale morning haze softens the light over a weathered sluice gate handle, its surface darkened by layers of old, peeling paint and fresh rain. Thick steel cables stretch diagonally from the mechanism, disappearing into the gray mist above the swollen floodwater below. The dry season holds the surrounding earth firm, against the heavy drizzle that coats every metal edge in a glossy sheen. Along the levee path, the rusted textures of the iron blend with the cool, silver tones of the wet cables. One droplet rests on the lower curve of the handle before sliding down to merge with the streaks of water running along the metal. The composition pulls attention along the taut lines toward the distant, hazy water line.
