Scarlet Macaws at Clay Lick Tidal Inlet Sunset
by Harry Glover
Golden light spills across a muddy clay lick beside a tidal inlet, illuminating two scarlet macaws perched on the eroded bank. Their brilliant red plumage contrasts with the deep ochre of the wet earth and the pale gray of the receding water. The birds face the setting sun, their wings folded tight against bodies that appear heavy with the day's activity. Dry grasses fringe the top of the clay slope, bending slightly in the still air. The sky above is a seamless gradient of orange fading into soft violet, devoid of clouds. A small ripple on the water's surface reflects the fading horizon glow, while the macaws' shadow stretches long and thin across the damp clay floor. The texture of the lick shows deep vertical fissures where rain and tide have carved the soil over time.
