Magenta Sky Over Flooded Rice Terraces in along freshly irrigated rows near Ho Chi Minh City

Magenta Sky Over Flooded Rice Terraces

by Yuki Villarreal

Predawn darkness envelops freshly irrigated rice terraces near Ho Chi Minh City, where water fills the narrow channels between rising earth rows. A sweeping beam of artificial light cuts through the gloom, illuminating the shimmering surface of the irrigation water. The sky above has shifted to an impossible deep magenta hue, casting a surreal glow that reflects off the wet soil and standing water. The texture of the mud is sharp and dark, against the bright, liquid sheen. Geometric rows stretch across the wide panoramic frame, their edges defined by the light. The water's surface breaks the reflection of the unnatural sky into fragmented, glowing ribbons. One ripple disturbs the mirror-like surface near the foreground, distorting the magenta light into a jagged streak of color.
