Scarlet Macaw Pair on Clay Lick at Blue Hour in above a glacial stream near Phnom Penh

Scarlet Macaw Pair on Clay Lick at Blue Hour

by Catalina Armstrong

Vivid crimson and electric blue feathers of two scarlet macaws stand out against the muted earth tones of a clay lick. The birds perch on a rough, damp earth bank beside a glacial stream flowing through the humid wet season landscape near Phnom Penh. Reflected light from the water casts a cool, silver glow across their wings and the wet clay surface. Droplets rest on the texture of the soil, glistening in the low blue hour light after rain. Their heads tilt with alert tension, eyes scanning the surroundings. The shallow depth of field blurs the distant green foliage into soft patches of emerald and dark shadow, isolating the pair against the shimmering water edge.
