Cassowary at Malaysian Reed Bed Dawn

by Katie Watkins

Low morning light cuts through the humid haze hovering over a dense reed bed in Malaysia. A cassowary stands in tight profile, its jet-black plumage absorbing the dim glow while the red wattle and blue neck skin vibrate with saturated color. Droplets of water rest on the sharp, bristle-like feathers of its head crest and the wet stalks of the surrounding reeds. The ground glistens with a thin film of moisture from recent rain, reflecting the pale horizon where the sun has just begun to rise. Fine mist rests on the fern fronds in the background, softening the deep greens of the jungle edge. The bird’s heavy, three-toed foot presses into the spongy mud, leaving a distinct indentation. One water droplet slides from the tip of a reed blade onto the bird's dark back.
