Rusted Waterwheel Uphill Flow Ghent Mill Ruins

by Lena Curtis

Morning mist rests on the stone cloisters near Graslei in Ghent while an abandoned paper mill stands amidst the ruins. The massive iron waterwheel, seized by deep orange rust, dominates the left third of the frame. A stream of water defies gravity, climbing the visible slope of the wet stone floor to pool at the highest point near the collapsed arches. Reflected light from the water creates a shimmering, ghostly surface across the damp masonry. The pale green shoots of early spring push through cracks in the gray stones. The impossible upward flow of the liquid contrasts sharply with the heavy, static decay of the rusted metal and crumbling brickwork. one drop of water hangs from the lowest gear tooth, defying the upward current below it.
