Misty Stone Aqueduct Over Dry River Valley in at a canal lock chamber near Manali

Misty Stone Aqueduct Over Dry River Valley

by Raymond Saunders

Thick white mist rests on the floor of a dry river valley, obscuring the bottom while revealing the massive stone arches of an ancient aqueduct above. The structure stands in deep shadow, its rough-hewn blocks defined only by a sharp rim of cool blue light along the top edges. Midsummer heat has evaporated the water, leaving the riverbed exposed and cracked beneath the arches. To the right, the concrete walls of a canal lock chamber rise vertically, against the weathered masonry of the aqueduct. The stone surfaces appear cold and damp despite the season, glistening slightly where the mist touches them. A faint, pale glow from the pre-dawn sky illuminates the upper curve of the nearest arch against the dark void below.
