Scarlet Tanager Perched on Branch Over Glacial Stream

by Alec Frank

Vivid crimson feathers of the scarlet tanager stand out against the dense, damp green canopy of early spring Louisiana. Rain falls steadily, creating a fine, shimmering veil that softens the background foliage while droplets rest on the rough bark of the foreground branch. The bird sits motionless, its black wings folded tight, eyes fixed forward with predatory intent under the flat, harsh glare of noon. Below, the glacial stream flows with a milky, turquoise hue, churning white water where it hits rocks. Framed by a U-shaped gap in the leaves, the scene isolates the bird against the rushing water. One raindrop slides down the wet wood near the bird's talon.
