Open Bank Vault in Roofless Hammam Ruin

by Jeffery Bautista

Steel-blue ambient light fills the interior of a roofless structure in South Dakota, revealing the heavy steel door of a bank vault swung wide against the dark masonry. One tumbleweed rests on the rough concrete floor, caught in the shadow of the vault's threshold. The sky above glows with the deep indigo of blue hour, while scattered clouds drift overhead where a storm has recently cleared. Weathered stone walls show layers of erosion, and the dry earth outside contrasts with the smooth, cold metal of the vault door. Shadows stretch long across the floor, showing the depth of the open chamber. The vault's interior remains dark, a hollow rectangle framed by the fading evening light.
