Open Bank Vault Amidst Rain and Midnight Sun in Norway

by Corey Norris

Cold silver dawn light washes over the crumbling stone facade of an abandoned bank in rural Norway. Heavy steady rain streaks down the weathered masonry, turning the rough granite surfaces dark and slick. The massive iron vault door hangs open, its heavy mechanism rusted into a permanent arc against the gray sky. Inside the dark recess, a dry tumbleweed rests on the damp floorboards, caught in the threshold where the interior shadow meets the wet exterior. Water pools in the irregular cracks of the stone steps leading up to the entrance. The endless daylight of the midnight sun creates a flat, shadowless illumination that highlights the texture of the peeling paint and the wet sheen of the metal door. One droplet rests on the bottom edge of the rusted frame before falling.
