Ocean Doorway in Angkor Temple Stone Altar

by Cole Blevins

Pale limestone walls reflect the flat noon glare into a soft, even illumination that washes over the ancient stonework. Thick tree roots wrap around a carved stone pillar, their brown fibers against the gray, weathered surface of the altar base. The floor is polished smooth, holding muted, distorted reflections of the surrounding architecture. Instead of a solid stone wall, a rectangular opening reveals a vast, open ocean with choppy blue water and whitecaps stretching to the horizon. The impossible sea view sits flush against the temple interior, creating a seamless transition from enclosed stone to endless water. Small droplets of water glisten on the lower stone edge where the roots meet the floor.
