Surreal Angkor Temple Roots Silhouetted in inside a candlelit nave in Siem Reap

Surreal Angkor Temple Roots Silhouetted

by Colin Todd

Carved stone blocks form the archway of an ancient Angkor temple, their surfaces rough and pitted by centuries of monsoon rain. Thick, fibrous tree roots drape over the lintels, engulfing the sacred reliefs in a tangle of organic matter. Inside the candlelit nave, rain-slicked air hangs heavy as late-afternoon light falls through sheer curtains, casting soft, shifting patterns on the floor. A second sun hangs low in the background sky, a duplicate orb that throws extra, believable highlights across the wet stone and deepens the shadows in the corners. The temple stands silhouetted against this impossible dual light, creating a sharp contrast between the dark, damp interior and the glowing, surreal horizon. The final beam of light strikes a specific moss-covered carving near the threshold.
