Angkor Temple Roots Engulf Stone Corridor Haikou

by Emilio Copeland

Soft, overcast dawn light falls through a stone archway, illuminating a section of an ancient Angkor temple where thick tree roots have merged with carved limestone blocks. The roots, textured with deep fissures and mossy green patches, wrap around intricate bas-reliefs depicting celestial figures. Polished stone surfaces along the corridor floor reflect faint, cool highlights from the diffused sky. A wooden prayer wheel stands adjacent to the root-entwined pillar, its brass rim catching a subtle gleam. The cool season air leaves the leaves on the roots a muted olive, against the weathered grey of the sandstone. A small patch of morning dew glistens on a carved lotus petal near the base of the wall.
