Khmer Temple Stone Wrapped in Banyan Roots in in a chapel lit by stained glass in San Jose

Khmer Temple Stone Wrapped in Banyan Roots

by Sheila Adkins

Weathered sandstone blocks form the base of an ancient Khmer structure, their surfaces deeply carved with floral motifs now softened by time. Thick, gnarled banyan roots drape over the masonry like heavy ropes, binding the stone together in a slow, natural embrace. The scene sits inside a chapel illuminated by late morning light filtering through stained glass panels. Shafts of red, blue, and gold dust dance through the air, settling on the rough textures of the rock and the fibrous bark. Leading lines of the roots guide the gaze upward along the crumbling archway. The stone feels cool and solid against the warm, shifting colors of the glass light that pools in the shadows.
