Silhouetted Pinpeat Ensemble at Angkor Temple Blue Hour in on a festival main stage in Siem Reap

Silhouetted Pinpeat Ensemble at Angkor Temple Blue Hour

by Nelson Singleton

Monsoon rain glistens on the weathered sandstone pillars of an Angkor temple as a Cambodian pinpeat ensemble performs on a festival stage. Five musicians stand in deep silhouette against the fading twilight sky, their traditional conical hats and long-sleeved robes defined only by sharp outlines. Soft blue light washes over the wet ground, reflecting the faint glow of distant floodlights. Water droplets rest on the edges of the gong frames and bamboo instruments, catching the dim illumination. The performers hold their mallets poised mid-air, frozen in the rhythm of the ceremony. Rain streaks blur the background architecture, while moisture beads on the polished wood of the drums. One reflection of a musician's arm appears in a puddle at the stage's edge.
