Orange Water Tower at Phnom Penh Lock Sunset
by Glenn Pham
Wet orange paint covers the curved metal bowl of a water tower rising above a canal lock chamber near Phnom Penh. Rain-slicked concrete walls reflect the fading golden light of a clearing storm. The wet season sky holds a soft gradient of violet and deep amber just above the horizon. Heavy steel bolts and rivets dot the tower's surface, glistening with residual water droplets. The low angle emphasizes the structure's imposing scale against the darkening water below. Ripples on the canal surface mirror the tower's underside and the last rays of sun. Rust streaks run vertically down the metal sides, mixing with the fresh orange coating. One heavy chain hangs loosely from a railing, its links wet and dark against the bright paint. The edge of the lock gate shows signs of heavy use, with scuffed concrete and algae growth near the water line.
