Kampong Cham Cathedral Buttress with Endless Doors

by Elias Mullins

Pale morning light bounces off the curved limestone surfaces of a massive flying buttress inside the nave of a Kampong Cham cathedral. The air holds the dampness of the rainy season, leaving a faint sheen on the worn stone and polished floor. Instead of solid walls, identical wooden doors line both sides of the corridor, creating an impossible row of entrances where rooms should exist. Each door stands perfectly symmetrical, reflecting the same muted glow from the indirect light. The stone arches curve overhead, framing the endless sequence of doors that stretch into the distance. A shadow falls sharply across the floor, revealing the texture of the rough-hewn stone beneath the pale, damp air.
