Night Coral Polyp Extending Tentacles in Belize

by Regina Ho

Deep shadow envelopes the reef crevice where a single coral polyp unfurls its translucent tentacles. A sharp rim light traces the delicate edges of the organism, separating its pale flesh from the surrounding darkness. Water clarity is exceptional, allowing visibility into layers of rock and sand that recede into the distance. Fine surface ripples distort the light, creating a shimmering, slow-moving texture across the upper water column. The polyp’s structure appears soft yet defined against the hard, jagged crevice behind it. A faint glow highlights the tip of the longest tentacle as it reaches toward the open water.
