Sea Cucumber Defensive Threads Reef Belize in along a coral wall with blue water beyond near Belize City

Sea Cucumber Defensive Threads Reef Belize

by Maxine Anthony

Dense green light falls through the water column, illuminating a sea cucumber pressed against a textured coral wall. The creature extends fine, translucent defensive threads that drift outward into the blue void beyond. Tiny suspended particles glitter like scattered dust motes in the shafts of light breaking through the surface ripples above. The coral surface displays rough ridges and porous holes in shades of brown and gray. Blue water stretches into the distance, fading from turquoise near the wall to deep azure further out. The threads hang motionless, suspended in the still water. A faint shadow falls beneath the coral ledge where the animal rests.
