Red Flame Scallop in Belize Reef Crevice in along a coral wall with blue water beyond near Belize City

Red Flame Scallop in Belize Reef Crevice

by Maureen Leach

Deep shadow fills the narrow crevice where a flame scallop rests against the rough coral wall. Vibrant red tendrils flare outward from the shell, glowing faintly against the dark stone. Behind the creature, the water stretches into a hazy blue, softened by suspended plankton that diffuses the early morning light. A thin rim of illumination traces the scallop's edge, separating the dark interior from the open sea. Fine particles drift slowly through the water column, showing suspended motion. The texture of the coral is pitted and uneven, against the smooth, glistening surface of the shell. A beam of light catches a cluster of red filaments at the very tip.
