Navajo Sand Painting in Hogan at Sunset

Molten afternoon light slants through the doorway of a family hogan near Window Rock, illuminating a Navajo sand painting spread across the packed earth floor. The design features intricate patterns of crushed colored sand in deep reds, vibrant yellows, and charcoal blacks, arranged with precise geometric symmetry. Late autumn air leaves the surrounding walls bare, revealing the rough texture of the wooden poles and woven brush that form the structure's frame. Dramatic clouds gather outside, casting shifting shadows that stretch across the vibrant sand colors. The fine grains shift slightly under the weight of unseen feet, creating a soft contrast against the rigid lines of the design. One dark shadow falls across the lower right corner of the artwork.
