Navajo Sand Painting on Hogan Floor

by Helen Conley

Vibrant mineral pigments form intricate geometric patterns and symbolic figures across the packed earth floor of a traditional hogan. The design features concentric circles of white, yellow, red, and black sand, arranged with precise symmetry. Late afternoon light spills through the open doorway, casting long shadows that stretch across the textured ground. Outside, the humid air hangs heavy after rain, darkening the red soil of the surrounding landscape. Dried autumn grasses and fallen leaves litter the perimeter of the brush arbor. The warm glow of the setting sun illuminates the fine grains, highlighting the delicate texture of the sand against the rough, compacted earth. A shadow from a wooden support beam falls sharply across the lower edge of the artwork.
