Flash Flood Carving Canyon New Mexico Evening

by Rhonda Rios

Murky brown water surges through a narrow sandstone slot, its surface churning into white foam as it strikes the red rock walls. The low angle emphasizes the towering cliffs that funnel the torrent, while wind whips the turbulent surface into jagged ripples. Dust rises from the dry canyon floor, caught in the chaotic motion of the flood. The late afternoon light reflects off the wet stone, casting shifting amber and rust hues across the scene. Water splashes against the base of the canyon, eroding the soft sediment with relentless force. One droplet hangs suspended on a jagged rock edge before falling back into the rush.
