Moonlit Sandstorm Veiling Stars Over Dunes in beneath fast-moving cloud bands in New Mexico

Moonlit Sandstorm Veiling Stars Over Dunes

by Lillian Suarez

Bright open daylight floods a New Mexico desert where a thick, fast-moving wall of sand obscures the sky. Pale, shifting dunes stretch into the distance under a haze of suspended dust that softens the horizon. The air glows with a diffuse, yellowish-white light as the storm front advances, erasing sharp shadows and blending the ground with the sky. Layers of depth recede as the sand becomes denser, turning the landscape into a monochromatic wash of beige and ochre. No stars are visible through the heavy cloud bands of dust, only the relentless motion of the earth rising to meet the sun. The final edge of a dune ridge dissolves into the swirling particulate matter.
