Soft overcast light falls through the brush arbor, illuminating a complex sand painting spread across the earthen floor of a traditional hogan near Santa Fe. The design features symmetrical geometric patterns in crushed turquoise, yellow, red, and black sand, radiating from a central point. Fine grains of colored earth contrast against the rough, packed clay surface. Outside the shelter, early spring drizzle creates a sheen on the dry brush roof and dampens the surrounding sagebrush. The scene holds a stillness, with the vibrant mineral pigments resting undisturbed on the ground. One shadow from a supporting pole falls across the lower edge of the intricate design.
