Aboriginal Songline Ceremony Before Dawn in Sydney Hall
by Faith Barton
Cold moonlight floods the high ceiling of a large ceremonial hall in Sydney, illuminating figures arranged in a circle on the floor. The participants wear vibrant ochre and white body paint that glows against the cool blue shadows of the predawn hour. Red desert sand has been spread across the polished floor, creating a stark textural contrast with the smooth concrete surroundings. Bodies move in rhythmic unison, arms raised in joyful gestures, while intricate patterns of red and yellow ochre mark the sand beneath their feet. The clear night sky is visible through the high windows above, casting a sharp, pale light that defines the edges of the dancers and the dust motes rising from the ground. at the edge is the sharp shadow of a raised hand falling across the red sand.
