Moss and Rope Marks on Gobi Dam Wall in along a dam spillway in the Gobi Desert

Moss and Rope Marks on Gobi Dam Wall

by Shawn Ellison

Rough concrete stretches vertically under the harsh midday sun, its surface scarred by dark, vertical lines where thick ropes once rubbed against the stone. Patches of resilient green moss rest on the damp crevices near the spillway base, contrasting sharply with the bleached, dusty gray of the surrounding Gobi Desert rock. The water line is faint but visible, leaving a darker stain that cuts across the texture of the cured cement. Sunlight hits the wall at a steep angle, creating deep shadows in the rope grooves and highlighting the rough, pitted grain of the concrete. one drop of water hangs precariously on a mossy edge, ready to fall onto the dry, cracked earth below.
