Moss Furred Ruin Wall in Coastal Noon Light

by Laura West

Thick green moss and pale grey lichen coat the crumbling stone blocks of a weathered monastery wall near Nadi. The flat glare of noon sun flattens shadows, revealing the rough, pitted texture of the masonry where mortar has eroded away. Low-hanging clouds diffuse the harsh coastal light, casting a cool tone over the ruins during the cool season. Strong leading lines in the remaining wall structure guide the gaze toward the distant, cloud-obscured horizon. Patches of dried vegetation cling to crevices, while the stone surface displays a mosaic of earthy browns, muted greens, and chalky whites. One crack runs vertically through the center, splitting a large, moss-covered block in half.
