Kelp-strewn Breakwater Path Goa Lock in at a canal lock chamber in Goa

Kelp-strewn Breakwater Path Goa Lock

by Troy Horton

Wet, brown kelp mats sprawl across the concrete access path leading toward the canal lock chamber in Goa. The wet season leaves surfaces slick with residual water, reflecting the clear late-afternoon sun. Heat shimmer rises from the sun-struck stone, distorting the sharp lines of the engineering structure. Thick ropes lie coiled beside the path, their fibers heavy with moisture. The concrete shows signs of salt and wear, with water pooling in the grooves of the drainage channels. Dark green algae coats the lower sections of the lock walls, against the pale, bleached stone above. The path stretches forward, guiding toward the heavy metal gates in the distance, where the water surface remains still and glassy.
