Giraffe Herd Sunset at Tonle Bassac Watering Hole

by Antonio Skinner

Orange low-angle sunlight spills across the muddy surface of the Tonle Bassac watering hole, illuminating a tight cluster of giraffes. Their spotted coats glow with warm highlights while deep shadows stretch across their long necks. Fine mist hovers just above the water, softening the edges of the reeds and the animals' legs. The dry season leaves the surrounding earth cracked and dusty, against the dark, still water. Each giraffe stands with legs planted firmly, heads held high in a posture of patient stillness. The light catches the wet sheen on their muzzles as they pause, their dark eyes reflecting the fading orange sky. One droplet of water drips from the lip of a drinking giraffe, falling silently into the dark pool below.
