Lionfish Hovering Over Upslope Reef Water in beside a reef crevice under clear water near Stone Town

Lionfish Hovering Over Upslope Reef Water

by Whitney Cline

Hard coastal glare pierces the clear water, illuminating a lionfish hovering near a stone reef ledge beside a crevice. The fish displays sharp orange and white stripes with fan-like spines extended against the blue backdrop. Above the fish, the water defies gravity, flowing uphill along a visible slope of the reef structure. This impossible current pools at the highest point of the ledge, creating a distinct, suspended layer of liquid that curves upward against the rock. Fine suspended particles glitter intensely in the water column, catching the harsh light. The scene remains still despite the upward flow. One grain of sand rests on the lower rock surface, anchoring the impossible water movement to the solid stone.
